Liberia is on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the country is Monrovia. Liberia has approximately 3.5 million. Due to its proximity to the equator, Liberia has a very hot and rainy season followed by a dry season.

Liberia’s history is much different than most African nations as it was not a part of the European Scramble for Africa. Freed American slaves founded and and colonized Liberia with the help of a private organization called the American Colonization Society in 1821-1822. This partnership was formed in order to enable former American slaves to have greater freedom and equality.
